The Fallbrook Land Conservancy (FLC) will be hosting a Celebration of Trees
(Spring Open House) for the community on Saturday May 15, at the Palomares House
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The highlight of the celebration will be the FLC’s Save
Our Forest committee (SOF) tree give-away, in which a wide variety of trees will
be given to residents on a first-come, first-served basis.
"The trees are surplus trees that have been raised or acquired by Save Our
Forest," explained Jackie Heyneman, chair of SOF. "We want to find good homes
for them in the community, and provide an opportunity to learn more about the
Fallbrook Land Conservancy and its preserves."
Heyneman explained, "Providing beauty to your home is one of the benefits of
planting trees. Placement of trees in the proper location in relation to the
west or south facing wall can help to conserve energy, reducing your energy bill
by as much as 20%. Trees produce a healthier environment by cleaning the air of
carbon dioxide and pollutants. If strategically placed, they can also deflect or
reduce wind speed, prevent erosion, reduce storm runoff, and provide wildlife
habitat." Brochures with information on placing trees to your best advantage
will be available.
"We hope residents will take advantage of this opportunity to get a free tree
that will do all of the above for their home and the community," said FLC
executive director Mike Peters. "A small donation to cover the cost of caring
for the trees would also be gratefully accepted."
The FLC, a private nonprofit organization, owns and manages 1848 acres of
permanently protected open space in the area, manages more than 30 miles of
trails, and has planted thousands of trees in the community. For more
information on this event or the FLC in general, call (760) 728-0889. The
Palomares House is located at 1815 S. Stagecoach Lane, Fallbrook.
The open house will also feature exhibits describing the restoration work by
SOF, the Native Plant team and the Land Management team, trail maintenance on
the Santa Margarita River by the Trails Council, and acquisition efforts of the
FLC. Refreshments will be served. "We hope you will like what you learn and join
the FLC," said FLC Executive Director Mike Peters.
