Grant Funds Habitat Restoration
A Natural Resources Conservation Service grant
has provided funds for ten acres of habitat restoration at the Fallbrook Land
Conservancy’s Los Jilgueros Preserve. With a percentage matched by the FLC and
the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the generous grant allows the planting of
3,100 native plants over the next two years. The FLC’s Native Plant and
Wildflower Team, along with the Friends of Los Jilgueros and other volunteers
will be planting, mulching, stacking rock piles for habitat, extending
irrigation, and providing maintenance for the plants and wildflower seed.
Some of the proposed plants for the restoration include coast live oak,
sycamore, cottonwood, elderberry, toyonberry, white and black sage and
California rose. “By restoring the native vegetation at Los Jilgueros we are
establishing habitat for native birds and wildlife.“, says Jan Beeler, member
of the Native Plant and Wildflower Team.
The public is invited to attend a planting at Los Jilgueros on Saturday, Nov. 14
at 8:30 AM. The 46 acre Los Jilgueros Preserve, located just north of
Fallbrook High on South Mission Road, is one of ten properties owned and
operated by the FLC, a private, non-profit organization. Easy trails, ponds and
riparian habitat make this park a popular spot for walkers and birdwatchers.
